Plaxico Burress Eyes Return to the NFL

From Super Bowl hero to a prisoner waiting to return.

Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, a.k.a Harris Smith, is in terrific shape according his agent Drew Rosenhaus.

“[Burress] is doing great! He is running & lifting weights 5 days a week. He looks in terrific shape.”

Rosenhaus tweeted that after visiting Burress in prison. Burress is currently 33 years old and will be released from prison on June 6 after accidentally shooting himself in the leg with an unlicensed handgun. After his release, Burress hopes to get a deal with a team as he returns to the NFL.

“We talked at length about his future in the NFL & he…..can’t wait to get back on the football field in 2011,” Rosenhaus tweeted. “He is mentally & physically strong right now and is looking forward to the future!”

Some rumors are saying that Burress will end up back on the Giants, but I don’t see it happening. They already have enough receivers with Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, and Mario Manningham. There isn’t any room left for Burress to be successful.

I also don’t see Burress making the same sort of comeback as Michael Vick. Vick was 29 years old when he was signed with the Eagles and Burress will be 34 years old during the 2011 season. Not to say Burress can’t make an impact in the NFL, but I don’t see him making the Pro Bowl or anything else spectacular.

If he were to sign with a team, I could easily see the Redskins signing him. They need help at the receiver position and Burress is a big target. Plus, Dan Snyder likes to sign players who used to be great and give them big contracts.
