Wow, Lester Jean in the top 10? I haven’t seen enough of him to feel real secure in my evaluation, but I’m stunned to see him that high. No love for Greg Salas? I realize he is somewhat of a product of the Hawaii system, but there is a huge difference between him and Kealoha Pilares and previous Hawaii receivers such as Davone Bess and Ryan Grice-Mullen. I actually disagree with projections of Salas as a slot guy; he has the size and athleticism to play on the outside, and while his numbers are inflated, the productivity was certainly there. IMO he’s a 3rd-round selection and definitely a top 10 WR in this Draft.
Lester Jean was an animal. He beat Aaron Williams twice when they played Texas. His Combine performance was average, but, I didn’t expect it to be great. He knows how to get open deep. I might have to drop him a bit though because he didn’t run much underneath routes at Florida Atlantic, and I was questioning his overall quickness. His Combine numbers in the shuttle and 3-cone were amongst the worse. He’s a physical receiver though who doesn’t shy away from contact and uses his hands nicely to get off the LOS, but a lack of quickness can be a killer. I still like him as a 4th Rounder at worse though. He’s similar to Marques Colston (same exact 20-yard shuttle is interesting).
I was fairly surprised at the solid numbers Salas put-up in Combine tests that measure quickness, because he struggled to separate at Hawaii. I think he belongs more in the slot though. He’s savvy as a route runner and picking up yards after catch, but nothing about him is special. He’ll get a bump up, but he doesn’t belong anywhere near the Top 10.
