Eagles Draft Alex Henery, Could be the End for Akers

Alex Henery was a great kicker during his college career.

The Philadelphia Eagles used their fourth round pick to draft Nebraska K Alex Henery.

This is a very interesting decision considering the Eagles long history with current kicker David Akers. Akers contract is done and he will become a free agent once that begins. Most likely they didn’t draft him to compete with Akers. The fourth round is pretty early to be drafting a kicker.

It’s not all bad news for Eagles fans however. Henery was excellent during his time at Nebraska. During his career he made 96.6% of his field goals. Not only was he accurate, but he had a strong leg as well. He led the NCAA in touchbacks and made multiple 50+ yard field goals during his collegiate career.

Still though, Akers has been with the Eagles for the past 12 years and it is a bit surprising that they are willing to part ways with him now. Akers made a lot of important kicks as a member of the Eagles but it appears now that he is finished with the franchise.
