After the Oakland Raiders traded away as much as they did for Carson Palmer, it was obvious that they weren’t planning on bringing back Jason Campbell once his contract expires at the end of the year.
If they did bring him back, it wouldn’t be as the starter. The Raiders gave up way too much to get Palmer to not have him start. That leaves Campbell as a free agent, and he says that he is still a starting quarterback.
“I’m a starter in this league, definitely,” Campbell told Comcast SportsNet CSN Bay Area. “I look around the league and I play at a higher level than most guys. I’m definitely a starter. I’m not ready to accept being (in) a backup role. I’ve come too far and done too much and I feel like I’m still pressing on and I haven’t even got to my best yet.”
I could not agree more. Campbell has had one of the more troubling careers for a quarterback that I’ve ever seen. Pretty much every year he had a brand new offensive coordinator and had to learn a new system. Then this year when he finally starts playing well he broke his collarbone.
Without Campbell’s injury, the Raiders would not have made the move for Palmer and Campbell is still a Raider. He probably would have been re-signed with the silver and black at the end of the season too, but not anymore.
I think it’s safe to say that wherever Campbell ends up going, he’ll be in line to get the starting position. He might have to prove that he’s healed from his injury, but he’s too good of a quarterback to be a backup.
