Mark Sanchez gets called a Chihuahua and told he should “grow a pair”

Sanchez appeared on the September 2011 cover of GQ magazine.

It’s been a rough week for the New York Jets, but even more so for Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Former NFL quarterback and current analyst Boomer Esiason told Boston’s 850-AM that, “If you watched Mark Sanchez the last month of the season, he was like a chihuahua standing on Madison Avenue and 36th Street entering the Midtown Tunnel, eyes bigger than you-know-what, and just so shaky.”

Many people were outraged about the comments because they thought it was a reference to Sanchez’s mexican heritage, but Esiason told ESPN that he wasn’t trying to make that connection.

“I chose a small dog that always looks shaken and has big eyes, and doesn’t like big things — a chihuahua. It’s a skittish dog and he’s been a skittish player,” he said.

Esiason wasn’t the only one to pile on the Jets starting quarterback. On Thursday former Jets defensive tackle Kris Jenkins said on the Mike Lupica Show that he doesn’t think Sanchez is the leader for the Jets.

“The No. 1 quarterback should have said that a long time ago,” Jenkins said. “It would have been all part of the process of him growing a pair and standing up and being a man. But the thing is, he lost his because he got caught up in the wash that is New York, the spotlight, taking pictures in the magazines and doing all that stuff. That’s just what everybody has seen with Mark Sanchez, they got tired of it.”

The Jets are collapsing as a football team. Earlier this week players said that captain receiver Santonio Holmes has quit and even head coach Rex Ryan said that he has “lost the pulse” of his own team. Things don’t appear to be getting any better in New York.
