It was reported by NFL.com earlier in the week that the Ravens and Joe Flacco will begin contract negotiations during the week of the NFL scouting combine.
Joe Linta, Flacco’s agent, confirmed reports that the Ravens want to work on a contract extension for the 27-year-old quarterback. Linta spoke with The Baltimore Sun and said that his client is a top five quarterback.
“If the game is about wins and losses, he has to be in the top five [quarterbacks],” Linta said. “He is a player who has been extremely durable, never missed a game. And he’s done something that no one has ever done. In his four years in the league, he has never missed a game and has more wins than any other quarterback.”
He has a point. Flacco has 44 regular-season wins, which are the most by any quarterback in their first four seasons in the NFL. He is also the first quarterback to lead his team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons, reaching the AFC title game twice.
Flacco was a dropped pass away from taking his team to the Super Bowl this year. While his stats aren’t blowing people away, 57.6 percent completion percentage, 3,610 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, he just wins, baby.
While I wouldn’t put him anywhere near my top five (I wouldn’t even make my top 10) quarterbacks, he still is a valuable player to the Ravens. Also, Linta didn’t say that his client was a top five quarterback based on stats, he said that he’s a top five quarterback when you consider the game by wins and losses. If you think of it in those terms, it’s hard to argue with him.
